My name is Courtney Cummins, and I am completing my third year teaching 6th/7th Grade Science in the spring of 2020. I currently teach 6 sections of Science in a middle school setting. My students are wild about learning, and I wake up every morning motivated to instill a life-long excitement about science and inquiry in them on a daily basis!
I received my degree in Elementary Education from the University of Arizona in 2017 with endorsements in Middle Grades Science, 1st-8th Grade certification, and SEI. I spend a year observing and student teaching in a 1st/2nd grade ELD combo class, which was such a challenge and a blessing in disguise. I was pushed out of my comfort zone with both the grade level and student population, but grew so much as an educator in the process.
Over the course of my college career, I have had a well-rounded and diverse experience within the realm of education. In the traditional classroom setting, I have worked with 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade in my practicum placements within the College of Education. The three different placements have each taught me something new (whether it was from my mentors or my students themselves), and my time in the classroom has reaffirmed my passion for teaching and working in Title I schools. Outside of the university, I have worked with K-6 students during my time at Mad Science, where I facilitated lab demonstrations at local schools throughout Tucson. For three summers I worked with the San Diego Natural History Museum in their Education department, where I was a teaching assistant during their summer programs. I got to work with PreK-8th grade, which was challenging, exhausting, and fun all at the same time!
I am originally from Chula Vista, California, part of the greater San Diego County. When I am not teaching, I'm usually going to museums, reading, or drawing!
